Charges Expected After Suspects Were Caught on Doorbell Camera Aiming Fireworks at a Senator’s House
The Hennepin County Attorney’s office is considering charges after fireworks were deliberately aimed at the Champlin home of Minnesota Senator John Hoffman over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Suspects have been identified. A decision on charges could come this week, or it could take longer.
A Minnesota State Trooper has been stationed outside the home since the incident. The Hoffmans declined to comment through a spokesman.
The Same Camera. A Different Attack.
Sources tell 5 Eyewitness News the fireworks incident was captured on a doorbell camera, including the voices of a suspect or suspects yelling at the Hoffman family. That same camera captured images of the gunman who shot the Hoffmans last year.
One camera. Two separate targeting events. Same home. Incidents like these are a reminder of how quickly a home can become a target, much like this box truck crash in Downers Grove that left a family’s home destroyed in seconds.
Champlin Police wouldn’t confirm or deny the incident and said a report wouldn’t be available for seven to ten days.
What Happened at This Home Last Year
On June 14, 2025, a man disguised as a police officer knocked on the Hoffmans’ door in Champlin. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette suffered a total of 17 gunshot wounds. Their daughter Hope helped fight off the gunman, then called 9-1-1.
Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were killed by the same gunman later that same night.

Violence reaching people inside their own homes is becoming harder to ignore, and a shooting at a home party in Sampson County, NC left a deputy injured in a case that raised the same uncomfortable questions about residential safety.
Vance Boelter, who had a hit list of nearly 70 names, pleaded guilty to federal charges in June 2026 and is awaiting sentencing on July 23. Hoffman returned to the Minnesota Senate in February 2026 and is running for re-election.

Where the Charges Stand
According to KSTP’s reporting, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office confirmed the report has been forwarded to them and the case is “in the pipeline for review.” A charging decision could come this week or take longer.
Champlin Police took a different approach entirely. They wouldn’t confirm or deny that any incident even happened.
Why This Matters
Threats against U.S. lawmakers more than doubled between 2017 and 2024, from 3,939 cases to 9,474 investigated by the U.S. Capitol Police in a single year. State legislators like Hoffman have even less protection and far fewer resources behind them.
When danger reaches someone at home, the effect is lasting. A family in Hyattsville, Maryland learned that during a World Cup viewing when a tree crashed through their window and injured a 12-year-old girl. The setting doesn’t make it safer. Home is just where it happens.
