The Ranch Alex Trebek Used to Escape Hollywood Fame Is Selling at Live Auction in August
Alex Trebek spent 37 years making the world feel like the smartest person in the room. But away from the cameras, he wanted the exact opposite of a studio. Open skies, horses, and land that stretched as far as he could see.
That land was Windfall Farms. And it is now headed to auction.
Trebek Bought It for the Land, Not the Horses
The nearly 724-acre estate in Paso Robles, California, was not originally a vineyard play for Trebek. He used it to breed and train thoroughbred racehorses, including his most successful colt, Reba’s Gold.
He told the Los Angeles Times in 2003: “I fell in love with the property. I didn’t have any interest in horses or racing. At the beginning we had 700 acres and not one horse.”
That changed. He eventually kept around 300 horses on the property, 40 of which were his own. He described the ranch as the place where “everything just slows down and is much calmer,” a quiet contrast to a career that never paused.
Trebek sold the estate in the early 2000s. Agribusiness company Limoneira acquired it in 2009 and transformed much of the land into income-producing vineyards.
Two Trebek Properties Are on the Market. Here Is the Difference
This is the detail most articles gloss over, and it matters.

Creston Manor, located at 535 Calf Canyon Highway in nearby Creston, California, is a separate 577-acre property that Trebek was involved with through a winery partnership starting in 1987. That property is currently listed at around $6.5 million after a recent price cut.
Windfall Farms, the $33 million auction property, is a completely different estate at 4710 Flying Paster Lane, Paso Robles. Larger, more developed, and carrying a fully operational vineyard business.
Two properties. Two price points. One famous name attached to both.
What Is Actually Inside the $33 Million Estate
The vineyard side of the business is already running. Around 387 acres grow dry red varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Pinot Noir, sold under contract to regional wineries and generating positive cash flow under turnkey management.
The equestrian infrastructure Trebek left behind is still intact: a Kentucky-style 6.5-furlong racetrack, four barns (training, foaling, stallion breeding, and yearling), expansive paddocks, and enough room to add a professional polo field.
The main house spans approximately 10,000 square feet and currently operates as a hospitality venue. Two manager’s residences and a three-bay machine shop round out the structures.
There are also 76 approved development lots, seven wells with a combined capacity exceeding 7,000 GPM, and 4.5 miles of paved internal roads.
The on-site general manager, who has 17 years of experience running operations, is available to stay with the new owner. Limoneira has also offered to continue vineyard management under a separate contract post-sale.
This is not a fixer-upper. It is a working business with a celebrity backstory. Celebrity properties sitting this long on the market before finding the right buyer is not unusual — Elisha Cuthbert recently cut over $1 million off her LA home price and it still has not sold.
Why This Matters
Windfall Farms sits inside one of the most aggressively growing land markets in the United States right now.
According to a 2025 Beacon Economics study commissioned by the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, the Paso Robles AVA generates $2.8 billion in annual economic impact, supports nearly 9,000 jobs, and draws 2.5 million visitors per year.
While California’s overall wine sales dropped 8% over two years, Paso Robles wines grew 7% in retail sales value over the same period.
The region now covers more than 40,000 vineyard acres and 200-plus wineries.
Grape values in San Luis Obispo County rose from $9.8 million in 1985 to $323 million in 2023. Buying 724 income-producing acres inside this region, with development lots already approved and infrastructure already built, is not a common opportunity at any price.
The celebrity real estate market has seen its share of stubborn listings too — Joy Behar’s Hamptons home finally found a buyer after nearly two years and four price changes. A property with this much operational value behind it is a different conversation entirely.
Auction Details
Bidding opens August 5, 2026. Live bidding closes August 15 at the RM Sotheby’s stage during Monterey Car Week at Pebble Beach, marking Concierge Auctions’ first-ever live real estate auction at the event.
The listing price is $33 million through Sotheby’s International Realty. No minimum starting bid is required. A starting bid reduction is available for bids submitted before August 4.
Not every iconic property ends up at auction — the real house behind Winnie the Pooh is available to rent and you can actually book it. But for those with the appetite, Windfall Farms is the rare kind of listing that combines legacy, income, and land at serious scale.

Key Takeaways
Windfall Farms is 724 acres at 4710 Flying Paster Lane, Paso Robles, not to be confused with the Creston Manor property also making headlines.
Trebek owned it as a personal thoroughbred breeding operation before selling in the early 2000s. It is now a cash-flowing vineyard business with equestrian heritage, development upside, and experienced management already in place.
The celebrity name is the headline. The business underneath it is the actual story.
